Heartbreak in Manila: Philippines pushes Iran to the limit in World Championship exit

Alas Pilipinas’ historic run in its first-ever FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship came to a close on Thursday night, but not without leaving a lasting impression.

Pushed by a roaring SM Mall of Asia Arena crowd, the Philippines battled valiantly before bowing to world No. 16 Iran in a pulsating five-set showdown, 21-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 22-20, as the West Asian powerhouse booked its ticket to the Round of 16.

Iran, the last Asian squad standing in the tournament, secured the second seed in Pool A with a 2-1 card—tying Tunisia’s record but trailing in match points. The result lined them up for a knockout clash against the Pool H leader, still to be determined between Serbia and Czechia.

For the Filipino spikers, the heartbreaking defeat capped a spirited campaign that saw them shock reigning African champion Egypt two nights earlier and nearly topple one of Asia’s volleyball heavyweights.

Though the hosts entered the World Championship via automatic qualification, their grit and resilience earned them respect on the global stage, proving they could match up with some of the world’s best.

The Philippines exits the tournament with pride, having carried its colors with heart and fire in front of a home crowd that rallied behind every point.
